EMDR therapy in Echuca
EMDR is a structured therapy for working through distressing memories without having to retell them in detail. Mantua Psychology offers EMDR in person in Echuca and by telehealth anywhere in Australia, with a registered psychologist trained in EMDR. Nothing starts with the hardest memory. The first session is about getting to know you, understanding what you would like to work on, and deciding together whether EMDR is the right approach for you.

How it works
What EMDR actually involves.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It uses guided eye movements while you briefly bring a difficult memory to mind. The aim is to help the brain process and store that memory so it carries less charge.
It isn’t about retelling the story over and over. You stay in control of what you share, and many people find it a different experience to talk-based therapy.
There is no fixed script. How the work is sequenced depends on your needs and on what you want to work on.
What it helps with
When a memory keeps its grip.
EMDR can be used where a past experience still feels present, whether that is one event or something that happened over a long stretch of time. People come to it for:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Complex trauma and childhood adversity
- Single-incident trauma (accidents, assault, medical)
- Birth trauma
- Anxiety with a trauma component
- Phobias
Birth trauma often sits alongside wider perinatal support, and EMDR can form one part of that work.
What sessions look like
Standard or extended sessions.
A standard session runs for 50 minutes, and extended sessions are available for EMDR, so there is room to work through a memory without watching the clock. The length of an extended session depends on what you are working on, and the fee is always $260 per hour, however long the session runs.
Sessions are held at Office 3, 88 Wilkinson Drive, Echuca, or by telehealth anywhere in Australia. How many sessions you need depends on what you are working on, and it is reviewed together as you go.
Training
Trained in EMDR.
Aley Hooper is a registered psychologist with a Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology, trained in EMDR. Her wider training includes perinatal non-directive counselling, CBT, ACT, DBT, schema therapy, mindfulness-based approaches and ASIST suicide first aid, which means EMDR can sit inside broader therapy rather than standing alone.
